Today, we’re making adorable bat-shaped chocolate cookies. They’re rich, delicious, and perfect for Halloween parties, cozy movie nights, or a spooky afternoon in the kitchen.
Best of all, you don’t need professional baking skills to make them!
Ingredients
Makes approximately 16 cookies
- 1¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
For decorating:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- A little milk
- Optional black food coloring
- Halloween cookie cutters
How to Make Halloween Chocolate Cookies
Step 1: Make the Cookie Dough
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until creamy.
Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Step 2: Chill the Dough
Wrap the dough and refrigerate for approximately 30 minutes.
Chilling helps the cookies hold their shapes while baking, especially when using detailed Halloween cookie cutters.
Step 3: Create Your Halloween Shapes
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Roll the dough between two sheets of parchment paper until approximately ¼ inch thick.
Use bat-shaped cookie cutters to create your little chocolate creatures.
Don’t have bat cutters? Stars, moons, pumpkins, and ordinary round cutters work beautifully too.
Step 4: Bake
Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake for approximately 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are set.
Allow them to cool before decorating.
Step 5: Add the Gothic Details
Mix powdered sugar with a few drops of milk until you get a thick, smooth icing.
Use it to create tiny bat eyes, delicate wings, or miniature vampire fangs.
For a darker appearance, add a little black food coloring to the icing.
And there you have it: an adorable collection of chocolate creatures ready to haunt your dessert table.
Dracula’s Kitchen Baking Secrets
Want better results? Remember these three little tricks:
1. Never skip chilling the dough. Warm dough can spread too much in the oven.
2. Measure your flour carefully. Excess flour can make cookies dry.
3. Decorate only when completely cool. Warm cookies can melt your icing.
How to Store Your Halloween Cookies
Once completely cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for approximately 3–5 days.
Separate decorated layers with parchment paper to protect the icing.
