Gothic Christmas Cookies: A Dark and Delicious Holiday Recipe

Who says Christmas has to be all red, green, and glitter?

At Dracula’s Kitchen, we celebrate the holidays a little differently.

Imagine dark chocolate cookies, delicate snowflake decorations, antique golden details, and a cozy kitchen glowing beneath the winter moon.

That’s the magic of a gothic Christmas.

Today, we’re sharing a simple chocolate shortbread recipe that looks wonderfully dramatic without requiring complicated techniques.

What Are Gothic Christmas Cookies?

Gothic Christmas cookies combine traditional holiday baking with a darker, more elegant aesthetic.

Instead of bright decorations, think deep chocolate, white snowflakes, silver stars, burgundy ribbons, and vintage-inspired details.

They’re perfect for Christmas parties, homemade gifts, or a cozy baking evening.

Ingredients

Makes approximately 18 cookies

  • 1½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ⅔ cup (150g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅔ cup (80g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For decoration:

  • Melted white chocolate
  • Powdered sugar
  • Snowflake or star cookie cutters

How to Make Gothic Christmas Cookies

1. Prepare the Dough

Beat the softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth.

Add the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.

Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture.

Mix until the dough comes together, without overworking it.

2. Chill

Shape the dough into a disc, wrap it, and refrigerate for approximately 30 minutes.

This makes rolling easier and helps maintain the cookie shapes.

3. Create Your Christmas Designs

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Roll the dough between sheets of parchment paper to approximately ¼ inch thick.

Cut out stars, moons, Christmas trees, or snowflakes.

Arrange them on a lined baking sheet.

4. Bake

Bake for approximately 10–12 minutes, until the edges feel set.

Allow the cookies to cool completely on a rack before decorating.

5. Add the Winter Magic

Melt a small amount of white chocolate and transfer it to a piping bag.

Create delicate snowflake lines, tiny stars, or simple winter patterns.

You can also dust a few cookies with powdered sugar for a snowy effect.

The contrast between dark chocolate and white decoration creates a beautiful gothic look.

Three Ways to Create a Gothic Christmas Dessert Table

Use Dark Serving Plates

Black ceramic plates or dark wooden boards make lighter decorations stand out beautifully.

Add Warm Lighting

Battery-operated candles can create a cozy castle atmosphere without an open flame near your decorations.

Keep the Colors Simple

Choose black, burgundy, ivory, and antique gold for a coordinated holiday display.

Remember: beautiful presentation doesn’t require an expensive collection of decorations.

Can You Prepare These Cookies in Advance?

Yes!

You can prepare the dough the day before and keep it refrigerated.

Store cooled baked cookies in an airtight container. For the prettiest presentation, add delicate decorations close to the day you’ll serve them.
